Seeds of community growth passed out by fifth graders in Xenia

XENIA, Ohio (WDTN) – The hostess eyes barely peered over the stand at One Bistro. 37 Xenia Community Schools fifth graders spent time volunteering.

The gifted coordinator for Xenia Community Schools, Donna Shaw said the XTAR gifted students volunteered after learning about hunger and food disparity.

“One Bistro kind of came to the forefront of the conversation because of the good that they are doing for our community,” Shaw, said.

One Bistro makes eating affordable for everyone. Meals have a suggested price between $6 and $9. According to the One Bistro website the restaurant embraces a “pay what you can afford” concept. Anyone can volunteer time to pay for their meal as well.

“What started out as just a single conversation with the folks at One Bistro kind of grew into how else can we get the kids out in the community to kind of learn what it means to give back,” Shaw said.

Along with volunteering time at One Bistro the students passed out flower pots with candy and seeds to local businesses downtown.

“Thank you for blooming your business in Xenia,” Dillon Tootle said.

The pots encouraged businesses to plant flowers and thanked them for supporting the community.

“If we help the community than someday the community will help us,” Tootle said.

“I feel like we are doing something great and we should continue what we are doing because we can make a difference in this county and in this district,” Isaac Brown said.

Businesses were also invited to support the fourth graders as they become entrepreneurs and sell products they made during a showcase on May 7.

The fourth graders used the profits the fifth graders raised last year to start their businesses. This year they will donate 10% of the proceeds to One Bistro.
