Rare cool days in May

DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) – Spring is closer to being over, but the temperature in the Miami Valley feels more like the end of Winter. High temperatures in the lower 50s typically happen in March.

The high on May 12, was 52 degrees. It’s been 9 years since we saw high temperatures that chilly. Highs less than or equal to 52 degrees only happened 9% of all May days since 1999. In the last 20 years, we only saw 6 days colder than Sunday.

Low temperatures the last few days dropped into the 40s. The thermometer has stayed above 32 degrees all month. Mother’s day is associated with planting season. The odds of another freeze is very slim. It hasn’t happened in 109 years.

80s are on tap for the end of the week. Temperatures greater than or equal to 80 happened 31% in the last 20 years. The perfect 60-80 degree range happens an average of 60% of the month.

May is a time known for big temperature swings as we begin to transition into summer.
