Excessive flooding expected to continue this spring

Weather

Significant river flooding is expected to continue from Montana to Louisiana. The spring outlook released by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration predicts more widespread flooding will only get worse.

Right now there are 246 river gauges at flood stage. 42 of those are at major flood stage.

The flooding across the upper Mississippi and Missouri River Basins was the result of above average snowpack, rapid melting, and heavy spring rains. Rivers are running high. The soil is saturated. More rain is on the way. The water will have nowhere to go.

The latest climate outlook suggests Ohio will see slightly above average rainfall. – As well as much of the eastern United States.

According to NOAA’s Spring Outlook, nearly two-thirds of the continental United States is at an elevated risk for flooding over the next two months. Regions along the Missouri River and the Mississippi River are at the greatest risk for major flooding. The Miami Valley could see minor flooding throughout the spring. Minor flooding means there should be little property damage, but roadways may cause a threat to the public.

Dayton saw above average snow this year. We are sitting at 28.4 inches for the year. We typically see about 22.3 inches of snow. Precipitation for the year is also above average by 3.94 inches. 2019 was the third wettest February on record. March has seen more sunshine, but we still aren’t completely dried out. Our soil is still very saturated along with much of the eastern United States. It won’t take much rain to cause flooding.

The next storm system at the – end of the week is expected to bring more rain to Ohio and hydrologist are already worried about Northwest Ohio seeing potential flooding. This is going to be a spring to stay weather alert.
