COLUMBUS (WCMH) — Governor Mike DeWine announced Tuesday a decision to halt all executions in Ohio until the state can come up with a new lethal injection protocol.

“Ohio is not going to execute someone, under my watch, when a federal judge has found it to be cruel and unusual punishment,” said DeWine during a political forum session Tuesday afternoon.

DeWine said the state will come up with a new execution protocol, which will then likely be challenged again before it is used. Until that happens, there will be no executions.

In January, DeWine delayed the execution of Warren Keith Henness after a federal judge said Ohio’s current execution protocol would cause the inmate needless suffering.
