Diamondbacks cool off Reds, 8-3

PHOENIX (AP) - Riley Smith pitched six effective innings in his first career start, Tim Locastro had four hits and the Arizona Diamondbacks cooled off the Cincinnati Reds by beating them 8-3 on Saturday night.

Smith (1-0) was impressive, giving up just two runs on eight hits against a Reds team that had won six in a row. The 26-year-old right-hander took the rotation spot of lefty Caleb Smith, who was moved to the bullpen after struggling during his first outing.

Barnhart’s single leads Reds over D-backs 6-5 in 10

PHOENIX (AP) - Tucker Barnhart’s clutch 10th-inning single kept the Reds rolling on Friday night. Cincinnati’s playing so well these days that the only surprise was the catcher’s heroics were ever needed.

“It was a roller coaster,” Barnhart said. “We got out to a lead and then we gave it up.”

UC fires Brannen following investigation

CINCINNATI (AP) - Cincinnati has fired men’s basketball coach John Brannen following an investigation into reports of a rift with Bearcats players.

The school fired Brannen on Friday, six days after he was put on paid leave after six Cincinnati players decided to transfer last month. Tim Morris will serve as interim coach until a replacement is hired.
