Dayton rolls to 53-20 win over Valpo

DAYTON, Ohio - The University of Dayton football team rolled to a 53-20 win over visiting Valparaiso Saturday at Welcome Stadium.

UD put up big numbers on offense - 532 total yards, including 253 rushing yards and 292 passing yards. Dayton also had 27 first downs, while holding the Crusaders to just 15.

Redshirt freshman quarterback Jack Cook threw for all 292 of those passing yards, completing 19 of 22 attempts. And he also rushed for a team-high 57 yards.

Five different Flyers scored, led by redshirt freshman Richie Warfield rushed for three scores (one yard, four yards, and 12 yards). Junior Ryan Skibinski (nine-yard rush), redshirt senior Tucker Yinger(34-yard catch and run from redshirt freshman Jack Cook), redshirt sophomore Kyle Butz (51-yard punt return), and senior kicker Joseph Bruni (32-yard field goal and six PATs) also put up points for the Flyers.

Dayton improves to 3-3 on the year and 2-1 in the PFL, while Valparaiso falls to 0-5 and 0-2 in the PFL.   

•   Senior Dante Stefanini notched his first career interception on the second play of the game, setting up a Dayton score five plays later with a nine-yard rush by Skibinski.
•   Warfield's one-yard rush, culminating an 11-play, 83-yard drive, put UD up 14-0 with 3:28 left in the first quarter.
•   Valparaiso answered quickly with 58-yard strike from Chris Duncan to Griffin Norberg with 2:40 left in the quarter to cut the lead to 14-7 at the break.
•   The Flyers started the second quarter like the first - fast. Tucker Yinger scored on a 34-yard pass and run from Cook to push the Flyer lead to 21-7 with 14:07 to play in the first half.
•   After a Crusader three-and-out, Butz took the punt return to the house from 51 yards out, giving UD a 28-7 lead.
•   The Crusaders used a seven-play, 66-yard drive and scored on a five-yard pass from Duncan to Brannen Martin. The PAT was missed.
•   After a Valpo punt, redshirt senior Nick Surges recovered a fumble on the Crusader 16-yard line. It resulted in a 32-yard field goal by Bruni to give UD a 31-13 lead.
•   The Flyers capitalized after another Crusader three-and-out, using just three plays to go 73 yards for another TD. Butz's 40-yard catch and run from Cook put UD up 37-13 with 2:04 to play in the half. The PAT was no good.
•   The Crusaders missed a 23-yard field goal as the time expired. Dayton retained a 37-13 lead going into the locker room.
•   UD started the third quarter with an eight-play, 75-yard drive, capped off by a four-yard rushing TD by Warfield.
•   On Valpo's next possession the Flyers forced a safety to take a 46-13 lead.
•   Warfield broke away from the Valpo defense with a spin move and scored his third touchdown of the game on a 12-yard rush to extend the UD lead to 53-13.

• With 1:06 time left in the game, Kyle Cartales rushed for 11 yards to the end zone for the only score of the quarter.
• The 37 Flyer first half points is the most since UD scored 42 at Stetson on Oct. 12, 2013. Dayton went on to win that game 49-20.
•  Next week, the Flyers travel to defending PFL champion San Diego on Saturday, Oct. 13.  Game time is 5 p.m. ET.  USD and Dayton were picked 1-2 in the PFL preseason poll.  
 Drake was picked third in the PFL poll.  Kickoff for Drake is 1 p.m. ET
