Suarez homers twice as Reds edge D-backs

PHOENIX (AP) -- Eugenio Suarez homered twice in support of Trevor Bauer, who held his former team to one run on four hits in the Cincinnati Reds' 3-1 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks on Sunday.

Suarez pulled into a tie for the major league home run lead at 47 with Pete Alonso of the New York Mets, who played later Sunday. The Reds, with two wins in their three-game series with Arizona, did more damage to the Diamondbacks' fading playoff hopes.

49ers roll over Bengals 41-17

CINCINNATI (AP) -- Jimmy Garoppolo tied his career high with three touchdown passes Sunday, and the San Francisco 49ers completed a sweet and satisfying week in the Buckeye State with a 41-17 victory over the Cincinnati Bengals that left them unbeaten for the long flight home.

Rather than return to the West Coast after their opening 31-17 win in Tampa Bay, the 49ers headed to Youngstown, Ohio, where they worked out on a soccer field, enjoyed a local ice cream shop and rested at a Holiday Inn. Then they started their trek west with a resounding and notable win.

Reds lose combined 1-hitter to DBacks

PHOENIX (AP) -- Merrill Kelly pitched seven scoreless innings, Nick Ahmed's triple led to the game's only run and the Arizona Diamondbacks snapped a six-game losing streak by beating the Cincinnati Reds 1-0 on Saturday night.

It was a much-needed win for the Diamondbacks, who are trying to stay in a crowded National League wild-card race. They're still 4 1/2 games behind the Chicago Cubs for the final playoff spot with 13 games remaining.
