Young’s Dairy making repairs after cow blown from sign

YELLOW SPRINGS, Ohio (WDTN) —  Workers are busy making repairs at Young’s Jersey Dairy after the cow on top of its iconic sign was blown off by Saturday’s strong winds.

Owner Dan Young said the cow comes down from the sign every few years to be repainted and fixed up; he said it was probably about time for it to come down, but he just wasn’t planning on it like this.

While the rest of the farm was quiet Sunday, Young spent the day tending to his broken cow that was missing an ear.

“I’m out here in the parking lot looking for a cow ear,” said Young. “Yeah, no. I’ve not had to look for a cow ear before.”

The 50 pound cow has been sitting atop the Young’s Jersey Dairy sign for more than 40 years, but it was no match for strong wind gusts.

“Some people are saying we’re trying to ‘milk this for what it’s worth,'” laughed Young.

Visitors like the Keuffer family recognize the dairy by the landmark, and knew immediately something was missing when they pulled up to the farm Sunday.

“They know that when we pull up that the cow means that they’re at Young’s Dairy,” said Katie Keuffer.

Young had to wrangle the cow into the barn to make repairs.

“One missing horn, but we have a horn; and we’ve got one broken tail, but there’s a tail; and of course the left rear leg is on top of the sign,” stated Young as he took inventory of the bovine.

Now, he’s on the hunt for its ear.

“I hope they find it and they put it back together okay,” said Keuffer.

After spending the day combing through the gravel and grass with no sign of an ear, Young said he could be searching for it until the cows come home.

“No luck. We’ll just have to rebuild it,” conceded Young.

Young said it might take about a week to make repairs, but the cow will be back up on top of the sign.
