JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – A woman is dead and her ex-boyfriend is now in jail.
Jackson Police say Eric Townsend turned himself in after they say he ran Kanendra Hawkins over with his car.
Hawkins was only 25-years-old.
JPD says they initially took the call as an accident with injuries but when they got to the scene, they realized it was something much more grim.
“It’s a tragic situation I can tell you that. It’s a tragic situation for this young lady and all parties involved,” said Commander Tyree Jones with the Jackson Police Department.
Jackson Police call it a crime of passion.
One that ended with a man in jail, his former girlfriend dead, and their child now, without both parents.
“We still in the preliminary stages at this time. Of course, that is something we will look into during the course of the investigation. But, at this particular time, I can’t provide you a history of any domestic related issues between the two of these individuals,” said Commander Jones.
Newman Avenue near Northside Drive was filled with squad cars as investigators roped off the crime scene.
While we may not know the history of this pair, or exactly what led up to this, police say things got heated and ended violently.
One witness told WJTV, he heard the commotion just before she was killed.
“We do have evidence that there was a physical altercation inside the vehicle and allegedly she was pushed out of the vehicle. There is evidence to support that theory as well,” said Commander Jones.
We tracked down some of the victim’s family and friends.
They were too emotional to talk to WJTV on camera, but they described the situation as tragic.
The victim’s family is held a vigil in her honor Monday night.
