DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) – Dr. Marc Clauson with Cedarville University joined 2 NEWS Tuesday to discuss what the American people can expect to hear during tonight’s State of the Union address.
Another potential government shutdown is mere weeks away, and some wonder if the President will declare a national emergency during the address in order to secure border wall funding. Dr. Clauson feels that while President Trump will certainly focus mainly on immigration and the border wall, he will not by any means neglect other issues during his speech.
“He’s going to talk about infrastructure, healthcare, and some other big issues he considers important,” he said.
Historically speaking, State of the Union addresses have been fairly comprehensive, according to Dr. Clauson. The presidents would come with their agenda for the year ahead and lay out specific plans.
This, he says, has not been the case for the past few decades.
“They’ll make broad categorical statements about what they want to do but mainly it’s going to be people who are extolling the virtues of the President in some way. It’s going to be very broad-based, vague statements about ‘what I want to do,’ and ‘what I can do,’ and ‘what I have done,’” Dr. Clauson says.
