Trump begins search to replace Justice Kennedy

U.S. & World

(NBC News) After a secret White House meeting with retiring Justice Anthony Kennedy Wednesday, President Trump announced he’ll pick Kennedy’s replacement from a list of 25 conservatives, cementing the court’s conservative majority.

Justice Kennedy was a swing vote who sometimes sided with his liberal colleagues on contentious social issues.

His retirement sets up what is likely to be a bitter political fight over abortion, gay marriage and affirmative action, heading into the fall midterm elections.

Senate Republicans plan to vote quickly on a replacement for Kennedy, as they fight against Democrats for control of the Senate in the November election.
