RICHMOND, Ind. (WDTN) – Friday, the Wayne County Coroner identified the 14-year-old suspect as Brandon Clegg of Richmond. The Coroner said the manner of death was a single gunshot wound and there was no evidence of any other gunshot wounds or trauma. The Coroner would not specify the location of the fatal wound.
The Superintendent of Richmond Community Schools held a briefing Friday afternoon to give an update on Thursday’s attempted shooting.
Dr. Todd Terrill spoke with reporters at 2 pm Friday:
Thursday morning, police in Richmond were warned that a violent act could happen at Dennis Intermediate School. On Friday, ISP said the call to 911 tipping law enforcement to the possible shooting at the school came from Clegg’s mother, Mary York.
Officers immediately warned the school to go on lockdown and responded. When officers arrived, they confronted a 14-year-old boy outside the school. The teen then shot out the glass from a locked door and entered the school.
Policed chased the teen into the school where shots were exchanged between the suspect and police. The 14-year-old then took his own life by shooting himself.
No other students were injured in the incident.
The Indiana State Police said in a release Friday they expect this to be a lengthy investigation and said, “no time frame can be placed on when additional information may be available for release.”
ISP said it is reasonable to expect investigators have or will speak with anyone who had any knowledge of the suspect, including school staff, students and neighbors.
In a Facebook live video Thursday evening, Superintendent Todd Terrill praised first responders, faculty, and families following the events that unfolded.
