Protest follows “Stand Your Ground” shooting after man is killed in front of 5-year-old son

(WFLA) A crowd gathered in Clearwater, Florida for a candlelight vigil Sunday for Markeis McGlockton, the man who was killed in what is being called a “stand your ground shooting.”

Authorities said the 28-year-old was shot and killed in front of his 5-year-old son Thursday at the Circle A convenience store in Clearwater in an apparent dispute over a parking spot.

Sheriff Bob Gualtieri announced Friday his office would not arrest the shooter, who deputies identified as 47-year-old Michael Drejka, citing Florida’s controversial “Stand Your Ground” law, which grants immunity to anyone who uses deadly force if they can reasonably claim they were defending themselves.

“I’m not saying I agree with it, but I don’t make that call,” Gualtieri said, adding that the case will be handed over to the state’s attorney’s office to determine whether charges will be filed.
