MISSION, Kansas (NBC) – Students and staff at a Kansas elementary school are safe after an incident in the school’s parking lot forced the school into lockdown Friday.
Police exchanged gunfire with a suspect at a home across the street from Highlands Elementary School.
Officers say it all started around 1:30 Friday afternoon central time.
A district spokesperson says that’s when a parent outside the school reported hearing a gunshot.
The school resource officer then went outside and found a van damaged by a bullet.
A class having recess was brought inside, and the building was placed on lockdown.
That’s when investigating officers found the suspect, exchanged fire, and shot him.
That suspect was taken to the hospital in stable condition.
School officials say the school followed protocol for when there is a potential danger outside the building and that the district is grateful everyone is safe following the incident.
