Homeowner who shot officer: ‘I had no choice…I was in fear of my life’

U.S. & World

(WFIE) A Kentucky police officer is recovering after he was shot by a homeowner while chasing a suspect in Owensboro early Wednesday morning.

Kentucky State Police say 63-year-old David Turley mistook Officer Zachary Morris for the suspect and shot him.

Turley says he was in his backyard when Morris fired first, without identifying himself.

“Once they shot two times at my face, I had no choice. I was in fear of my life, and I returned fire,” said Turley.

State police say Turley has been questioned, and no charges have been filed.

Morris was taken to a nearby hospital for surgery. He is said to be in good condition.

The case of the suspicious person is still being investigated.
