Hi-tech lights for your inner Griswold

U.S. & World

Since National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation in 1989, holiday lights have gotten a lot smarter. The new Everlights system is meant to be left up all year round.

Bridget Carey of CNet says, “These lights these are LEDs that can be controlled all through an app you can control patterns brightness specific shades of colors. There’s no cord that is showing.”

Nearly invisible when you’re not using them, the lights are installed along the border of your home. Perhaps the best part is not having to deal with untangling Christmas lights, putting them up and then having to take them down again year after year.”

But convenience comes at a price! The starter bundle is about $400 with 25 feet of lights.

Says Carey, “Each additional strand is $150, so it adds up.”

App-enabled lights may be more budget friendly, such as these $70 lights from Lumenplay.

Carey adds, “You can control it when you’re away from home, so that’s a big perk.”

Enlist your smart speaker to be Santa’s helper with voice-controlled lights like these from Light Rhapsody for $60.

An $80 model from Playbulb even has a speaker built-in, or you can always upgrade dumb lights with a smart plug such as Belkin’s $20 Wemo Mini.

Carey says, “The best part about the smart plug is it will work after Christmas too, because you can plug in a lamp or a coffee maker.”

A gift that keeps giving long after the holidays.

Before you buy any smart lights or plugs, do your homework! Be sure to check if it’s approved for indoor or outdoor use. Also, see if there are any accessories required and make sure it’s compatible with your phone’s operating system or your smart speaker.
