SARASOTA, Fla. (WFLA) – The Sarasota Police Department and the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office announced in a joint press conference on Tuesday that the remains of Jabez Spann have been found.
Spann was 14 years old when he was last seen in the area of 22nd Street, Sarasota, on Sept. 4, 2017, two weeks before Hurricane Irma.
Officials said skeletal remains were found by a person working in a rural area of Manatee County, west of I-75/ Officials have not released the location where the remains were found.
The remains were linked to Spann through dental records. Detectives say they do not know how long the remains were at the location where they were found. They also do not know if Jabez passed away from natural causes or if foul play was involved.
Police think Spann may have witnessed the murder of 31-year-old Travis Combs on Aug. 28, about one week before he disappeared without a trace, however, this was not mentioned in Tuesday’s news conference.
Officials said Spann’s remains were found in a location he was not known to frequent and the agencies do not believe he left Sarasota on his own.
Officials said the investigation remains very active and ongoing. Sarasota police will remain the primary investigating agency, backed up by the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office.
