Beeping hoop helps blind boy play basketball

U.S. & World

(KSL) A gym teacher in Herriman, Utah is helping a blind student play basketball.

Kathy Howa Providence teaches physical education at Hall High School.

Back in January, she decided she wanted to help Conner Green, a visually impaired student, get involved in playing basketball.

After a brief search online, she found a beeper that could go on the basketball hoop and also a ball with a bell inside.

After buying the items with money out of her own pocket, Conner was able to learn how to dribble and shoot the ball, just by hearing the sound beeping on the backboard.

Green said it encouraged him to play with his classmates even though he had doubts at first.

“Coach Howa usually pushes me and tells me to keep going,” he said. “Basketball, sometimes I think I am not good at it and not good at dribbling, but Coach Howa says don’t give up.”
