Amazon rolls out new devices

U.S. & World

You don’t usually see a potato at a tech event, but that was one of many firsts for Amazon Thursday when the company unveiled more than a dozen new devices, including the Amazon Basics Microwave.

The $60 microwave integrates the Alexa voice assistant. You can even use it to order more popcorn.

Says Dan Ackerman of CNet, “Amazon wants to get you used to the idea that this Alexa assistant can be in anything.”

Including your car.

Amazon’s first smart car gadget puts Alexa on your dash with location-sensitive functionality and triggers for routines such as turning on your smart lights when you pull in the driveway.

“Auto really is the next battleground,” says Ackerman. “Apple has smart car software, Google does, so Amazon wants to be in there with Alexa.”

Amazon introduced a plethora of new devices, a smart wall clock, security camera, smart plug and a dvr.

But it wasn’t all smooth sailing.

According to Ackerman, “Some of this is clearly throwing a lot of things against a wall and seeing what’s going to stick.”

But the company is also safely sticking to it’s top selling smart speakers with updates for the entire Echo line, hoping that blue ring will ring in holiday sales.

Many of the devices are already available for pre-order and shipping next month.
