2 police officers hurt in Austin shooting

U.S. & World

There is limited information at this time, but the Austin Police Department tweeted that officers responded to a shots fired call in the 5500 block of Ponciana Drive before midnight when they were shot at. The situation, which is just east of Interstate 35 and East Stassney Lane, has now turned into a SWAT situation involving a barricaded person.

The injured officers have been transported to the hospital and are in stable condition, the Austin Police Association says. Austin-Travis County EMS says one injured officer is in his 30s and the other is in his 50s.

Police are advising people in the neighborhood to stay inside unless an officer knocks on your door and asks you to leave.

In a tweet, Interim Police Chief Brian Manley said: “Please keep our officers in your prayers.”

According to KXAN records, the last time an APD officer was injured in a shooting was in April of 2016. The SWAT officer was shot in the knee while serving a warrant.

This is a developing situation.
