Threat evacuated Northmont High School during wrestling match

CLAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) – During a wrestling match at Northmont High School the school was evacuated after parents reported suspicious behavior Sunday afternoon.

Parents told the program event coordinator that they saw some suspicious activity inside the gym area while about a thousand people were inside. Kathy Bones, from Tipp City was there to watch her 5 year old grandson wrestle.

“The announcer came across the speaker and said, ‘We need all the matches to stop!’ The referees blew the whistles and all the matches stopped,” Bones said.

Officials say they were looking for a possible suspicious package, but found nothing.

Clayton Police and the Montgomery County Sheriff’s K-9 unit did a sweep of the entire building and cleared it just before 6:00 p.m.

The district’s superintendent said they followed proper protocol and evacuated the building after the reports came in.

“I think everyone reacted in a way to make sure that safety was first,” said Supt. Tony Thomas.

All activities are cancelled for Sunday night. Classes will resume Monday morning.
