SPRINGFIELD, Ohio (WDTN) – An emotional day in court in the trial of Brett Meddock.  The 21-year-old is charged in the beating death of a 16-month-old Kaden Payne in 2015.

The mother of the infant took the stand for the first time.  A tearful Sierra Coy recalled the day her son died.  Coy said she trusted Brett Meddock with the care of her son.  Brett Meddock was her ex-fiancé.

She testified that Meddock was alone in a room with Kaden for approximately 30 minutes, but she did not see nor hear any unusual noises or cries from the child.

It wasn’t until 45 minutes later that she noticed the baby was breathing different.

“Myself I didn’t notice it until she pointed it out to me.  To me his face looked kind of like it was kind of a grayish color like his face was it was like an inward bruise,” Coy said.

Kaden Payne died shortly after from multiple blunt force trauma on January 20th, according to the medical examiner.  An autopsy revealed that the child suffered internal and external injuries to the head, neck and body.

Closing arguments are scheduled for Friday.  Meddock could face life in prison, if convicted.
