DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) — A man and woman are in custody after a three hour long standoff in Dayton Monday morning.
It happened in the 1000 block of Bunche Drive.
According to jail records, Shawn Smith, 25, is being charged with murder. Police say a woman was also in the home. Jade Taylor, 22, is being charged on interfering with law enforcement during the standoff.
Police originally were dispatched to the home to make an arrest on Smith–a homicide suspect; however, Smith and Taylor would not leave the house when asked.
SWAT and hostage negotiators were in a standoff with the suspects for more than three hours.
Dayton Police tell 2 NEWS an armored vehicle had to bust through a front door of the home, in order for Smith and Taylor to turn themselves in.
No shots were fired, and police were able to make the arrests without incident.
Police say they were forced to use homes of neighbors in order to stay warm during the standoff.
“We did have to rotate the officers. We used vehicles and homes,”It’s pretty cold out here and we took some measures to keep the officers warm and we did do that,” Lt. Mark Ponichtera said.
Dayton Police are now interviewing the man and woman — as both are now in custody. Lt. Mark Ponichtera would not comment on what homicide investigation they believe the suspect is wanted for.
Smith is due in court on Tuesday at 1:45 p.m.
