RUTHERFORD COUNTY, Tenn. (WKRN) – An overturned tractor-trailer closed Interstate 24 in both directions and a shelter-in-place was ordered by Rutherford County officials early Wednesday morning.

The crash occurred in the westbound lanes of I-24 near the Epps Mills Road exit around 3 a.m.

The office of Rutherford County Emergency Management asked all residents and motorists to stay clear of the area citing HAZMAT concerns.

Residents were asked to stay indoors, turn off all HVAC heat and air units and bring all pets inside. The Buchanan Estates subdivision is the area most affected by the order.

Officials with the Tennessee Highway Patrol told News 2 the semi was hauling chlorine-based pool chemicals.

The Tennessee Department of Transportation tells WKRN this could be a long-term closure due to HAZMAT concerns.
