Wapakoneta hotel fire leaves residents displaced

WAPAKONETA, Ohio (WDTN) – Around 20 people have been displaced following an overnight fire that engulfed the Koneta Hotel.

Wapakoneta Daily News reports that St. Mary’s, Uniopolis, Cridersville, New Bremen, Buckland, and St. John’s fire departments were all called in to provide mutual aid Sunday night around 11 p.m.

All residents were accounted for, but it is unknown at this time if anyone was injured.

A 19-year-old resident of the building was arrested on a charge of aggravated arson, a second-degree felony, just before 3 a.m.

The building’s owner says that emergency housing is in place for between 16 and 20 people who are displaced because of the incident.

Mercy Unlimited, located at 38 E. Auglaize St., is accepting donations of clothing for those who wish to help. Monetary donations are also accepted. Checks can be made out to Mercy Unlimited Fire Fund. Gift card donations can also be made with smaller amounts like $5 being preferred over large amount like $125, according to the Auglaize County EMA. 

The fire is under investigation by Wapakoneta Police, the Auglaize County Sheriff’s Office, the Wapakoneta Fire Department, and the State Fire Marshall’s Office.
