COLUMBUS, Ohio (WDTN) — Ohio State’s loss is Miami’s gain.
Redshirt freshman quarterback Tate Martell is leaving the Buckeyes, transferring to the Hurricanes.
Martell made the announcement on Twitter, tweeting “I’m a Hurricane.”
He sat behind Dwayne Haskins in 2018, seeing spot duty throughout the season.
Martell threw for 269 yards and one touchdown while rushing for 128 yards and two more scores.
With Haskins entering the NFL Draft, Martell appeared in line to start next season. But, Ohio State landed Justin Fields, a transfer from Georgia, to compete for the starting job.
Martell will petition the NCAA to play right away for Miami. If he loses his appeal, he’ll have to sit out the 2019 season, and will be eligible to play in 2020. He will have three more years of eligiblity with the Hurricanes.
