Officer hailed hero for saving 8 from burning duplex

Ohio

GIRARD, Ohio (WDTN) – An Ohio police officer is being hailed a hero for saving eight people from a burning duplex.

Officer Mathew Jamison was first on scene when a fire started inside a duplex on South Davis Street Saturday night.

He went inside the building to get everyone to safety.

“So he was instrumental in saving the lives I believe of those children because at that point with the smoke banking down it doesn’t take long,” said Luke Grunder, president of IAFF Local 1220.

Officials are still investigating how the flames sparked but think they started in the back corner of the building.

Firefighters say the building is a total loss.
