CINCINNATI (AP) — Authorities say a man found guilty of shooting and killing a motorist who accidentally struck a 4-year-old boy in Cincinnati has been sentenced to 18 years to life in prison.

A Hamilton County judge sentenced 27-year-old Deonte Baber on Wednesday. The Cincinnati man was convicted of murder charges in the March 2017 death of 44-year-old Jamie Urton.

Authorities said Urton stopped his car after striking the child who had run into the street and was beaten by the boy’s father. Prosecutors say Baber then arrived and shot Urton. The child survived.

The father is also charged in the case, but prosecutors said Baber was the one who killed Urton. Baber’s attorneys argued he wasn’t the shooter and said they’ll appeal.

No trial date has been set for the boy’s father.
