WINTER HAVEN, Fla. (WFLA) – Fire and utility crews in Winter Haven, Florida are frantically trying to rescue a puppy that fell into a drain.

The puppy fell into a drain some before 9:45 a.m. Monday on Grey Herring Drive near Lucerne Park.

Crews were originally trying to dig where the puppy fell in but say sand was filling in as they were digging. They decided to deploy a camera to check the dog and push it to a different pipe.

Authorities say the goal is to eventually get the dog to a pipe down the street where there is a manhole. A tactical team from the fire department is getting ready to go into the manhole to get the puppy once it makes its way to the pipe.

There is no word yet on how the puppy got into the drain or where its owners are.

Crews at the scene believe the puppy is a Chihuahua.
