Columbus Police officer shot in ambush, suspect in custody


COLUMBUS, Ohio (WDTN) — A suspect is in custody after a Columbus Police officer was shot late Thursday night in what authorities call an ambush-style shooting.

Authorities were conducting an investigation when gunfire erupted and the officer was shot.

Police say the officer called dispatchers just before 11 p.m. saying he had been shot near Hamilton Avenue in Columbus.

More officers responded to the scene and found the officer near the intersection of E. Hudson Street and McGuffey Road.

The officer was taken to OSU Main Hospital, where he is considered stable.

Police say the wounded officer was able to give responding officers a description of the suspect and the suspect vehicle.

According to police, the suspect fled the scene after the shooting.

Whitehall Police stopped the suspect vehicle near E. Broad Street and Yearling Road

Officers took the suspect and two other people into custody.

Police recovered a firearm in the suspect vehicle.

The suspects were taken to Columbus Police Headquarters for questioning.
