CINCINNATI (AP) — Organizers of the Ohio River Paddlefest say the annual trek down the river has been canceled for the first time in its 14-year existence.

Leaders say they made the difficult decision to cancel the paddle due to rising water levels and expected heavy rain from the remnants of Tropical Storm Bill.

The event typically brings hundreds of participants to canoe and kayak the 11-mile route from Coney Island east of Cincinnati to the city’s downtown. The Cincinnati Enquirer reports more than 1,100 people had registered early for the paddle this year, a record for the event.

Organizers say the paddle is now rescheduled for Aug. 2.

The festival’s planned concert Friday was still scheduled to take place.
