MIDDLETOWN, Ohio (WLWT) – A Middletown man has been charged with child endangering after an infant in his care stopped breathing.

Jesse James McCandless, 20, took the 2-month-old girl to Cincinnati Children’s Hospital on Feb. 17 and said she stopped breathing, police said.

Police said they were called to the hospital the next day and noted a burst blood vessel in the girl’s eye, as well as multiple rib fractures, some of which appeared to be healing.

McCandless told police that he had gone into the infant’s room at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 17 and the child had stopped breathing. He said he performed chest compressions and called a friend to drive them to the hospital.

The child’s mother told police that McCandless went into the child’s room after they heard her crying, and that after McCandless entered, the infant stopped crying suddenly.

McCandless came out of the room holding the child at an “awkward angle,” the police report said.

The responding officer contacted Butler County Children’s Services to make arrangements for emergency child removal.

Charges were filed Wednesday against McCandless and a warrant has been issued for his arrest.
