SIDNEY, Ohio (WDTN) — An investigation is underway after a fatal shooting in Sidney on Sunday.
A man was reportedly shot after attempting to break into his ex-girlfriend’s home, according to the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office. As of right now, it is unconfirmed who shot the man. The man died of his injuries on the scene.
The man has been identified as James Douglas Rayl, 22, of Sidney.
The shooting occurred on the 2900 block of North Kuther Road at approximately 11:00 a.m.
Rayl started beating on the door, the homeowner told the subject to leave and that he had a gun.
Rayl then shouldered the door several times eventually breaking the door open and started to enter the residence. Once Rayl entered the door, the homeowner fired three rounds. He then staggered back to the front of the garage where he fell.
Neighbors called 911 after hearing the gunshots. The identities of the individuals have not yet been released.
The sheriff’s office said the county’s prosecutor was informed of the incident and it will be presented to a grand jury.
