LOS GATOS, Calif. (WBAY) – An Emmy-nominated documentary covering the Manitowoc County murder trials of Steven Avery and Brendan Dassey is returning to Netflix.
The streaming company sent out a tweet saying, “It’s not over. @MakingAMurderer will return.”
The episodes will feature Avery’s new attorney Kathleen Zellner and Dassey’s legal team Laura Nirider and Steve Drizin.
It will also feature the return of “families and characters close to the case,” Netflix says.
“The new installments will take fans of the acclaimed documentary series back inside the story of convicted murderer Steven Avery, and his co-defendant, Brendan Dassey, as their respective investigative and legal teams challenge their convictions and the State fights to have the convictions and life sentences upheld.” – Netflix
There was no additional information on when the new season would premiere on Netflix.
Filmmakers Laura Ricciardi and Moira Demos previously told Variety.com that they had been recording conversations with Avery. “From our perspective, this story is obviously not over,” Ricciardi said.
“Making A Murderer” became a bona fide pop culture phenomenon after it debuted on Netflix last December, with an estimated audience of 19 million people. It spawned worldwide protests in support of Avery and Dassey.
The filmmakers made a case for Avery and Dassey, convicted of the 2005 slaying of freelance photographer Teresa Halbach. Investigators said Halbach’s remains were found on the Avery Salvage Yard property in Mishicot.
Previously, Avery had spent 18 years in prison for a rape he didn’t commit, and successfully sued Manitowoc County for $36 million for wrongful imprisonment.
Avery supporters believe the lawsuit was motivation for officials to frame him for Halbach’s murder.
Avery and Dassey were sentenced to life in prison. Dassey has a chance at parole in 2048.
Following the release of “Making A Murderer”, Avery filed to appeal his murder conviction and is now being represented by Chicago attorney Kathleen Zellner.Avery has asked to be released on bond as he pursues a new trial.
“Making A Murderer” is up for six Emmy Awards, including outstanding documentary series.
