WAKE FOREST, NC (WCMH) — The Grinch was hard at work yesterday when a mail truck caught fire in North Carolina, but the driver and a passerby jumped into action to save Christmas.

TWC News reports that a mail carrier pulled over in a Wake Forest neighborhood when she realized the truck was smoking. A neighbor said that it seemed that the driver’s first concern was getting all of the packages out of the car.

“She seemed like she was okay and she did a fantastic job, a heroic job, of trying to save the packages first especially at this holiday season,” said neighbor Rob Harper.

The fire started in the engine compartment of the truck and spread from there, according to firefighters.

The fire was out within minutes of firefighters arriving, but the fire department gives all the credit to the mail carrier and passerby for saving Christmas for many who had packages on the truck.

“If it wasn’t for her quick thinking to pull right over and remove the parcels, it could’ve been tough… Somebody did save Christmas, you give all the credit to that postal carrier,” said Chief Ed Barrett.
