Local radio station pays tribute to Prince

DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) – A Dayton radio station is paying tribute to music icon, Prince, after news broke of his death on Thursday.

For several hours, Mix 107.7 honored the pop superstar by playing his music back to back.

“We literally deleted everything that was planned for the afternoon and we just became ‘Prince 107.7’,” said Jeff Stevens, Mix 107.7 program director.

Stevens says the station’s Facebook page has been flooded with song requests and dozens of calls from crying fans.

“We were like we’re going on. This is what a local radio station is about. We’re playing Prince, we’re taking calls. people are just completely shocked,” said Stevens.

Stevens has been a DJ at Mix since 1999, he first heard Prince in high school

“I remember thinking his music was so cutting edge. The first time I heard him in 83′, especially when he really blew up in 84′,” said Stevens.

He hopes by playing Prince songs, which are meant to uplift, listeners will find a way to heal.

“We’re just trying to respond to the listeners, that’s what we’re here for. In a case like this, just like when Michael Jackson and Whitney Houston passed, we said forget whatever format we had planned, this artist deserves this,” said Stevens.
