DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) – Firefighters rescued a woman from a Dayton apartment while responding to reports of a fire Wednesday evening.

Authorities say it happened around 9:45 p.m. Wednesday at Redeemer Manor on St. Paul Avenue.

Responders found heavy smoke coming from one of the first floor units when they arrived at the scene. Fire officials say people inside the building were evacuating.

Crews found a woman in a wheelchair near the area where the fire started. Fire officials say she was trying to get out, but was unable to escape on her own.

Firefighters got her out of the building. She was taken to the hospital for minor burns and smoke inhalation, according to fire officials.

No firefighters were injured.

An arson investigator says unattended cooking is the likely cause of the fire.
