DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) – Cell phone video captured the moment a Dayton police officer tackled a suspect into the front window of an Oregon District shop over the weekend.
It happened at Heart Mercantile on East Fifth Street just before 2:30 Sunday morning.
Cell phone video filmed by a bystander shows officers pulling the man to the ground as the store’s front window shatters.
According to a police report, officers responded to a call about a “disorderly subject” outside the business.
The man is being charged with obstructing justice and resisting arrest.
The store shared photos of the damage on Facebook Sunday afternoon and expressed their gratitude to staff from nearby businesses who immediately rushed over to help:
“If there’s any heartwarming element to this stupid story, it’s that our friends and neighbors immediately came to our rescue. The staff at Ned’s and Hole rushed over to help, stand guard for more police to arrive, ensured our property was protected, and then boarded it up securely for us. They helped clean up and handle the situation while the police report was filed.”
Brittany Smith, one of the store owners, tells 2 NEWS that they are trying to appeal to the city to see if they can help cover damages caused by the incident.
Replacing the front window will cost thousands of dollars, Smith says.
