LEBANON, Ohio (WDTN) – More than 50 years ago, Staff Sgt. Timothy Shelton was wounded fighting in the Vietnam War. He recently applied to Senator Portman’s office for help correcting his military record when it was discovered that not only was he eligible for a Purple Heart, but two other awards as well.

Friday, he finally received those awards.

“Well, it only took 51 years, but like I said, if it wasn’t for Senator Portman and his staff, I wouldn’t have gotten this. They did the paperwork and all the legwork,” he said.

In addition to his Purple Heart, Staff Sgt. Shelton received the Vietnam Service Medal with three bronze service stars – the Combat Infantryman Badge, the Good Conduct Medal, and the National Defense Service Medal – as well as the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Ribbon.
