Vandalia volunteers prepare for more hurricane relief

Local News

VANDALIA(WDTN)- Churches of Christ’s Disaster Response Team is still in the thick of things with clean up in the Carolinas. They’re on the ground helping people rebuild their homes and clean up their neighborhoods. Before they can get a break, they are already gearing up to help with clean up efforts for Hurricane Michael.

“It’s a little different. We weren’t quite ready for this but it’s working out,” Laura Cremeans, of Churches of Christ DRT, said.

Cremeans just got back into town from helping Hurricane Florence victims. Now, she’s heading to Florida.

“We’re going to take some of our equipment from our North Carolina locations and send them to Florida. We’ve got some extra trailers there. Our first response trailers are there so we’re packing those up,” Cremeans said.

DRT’s yard is empty with all those trailers parked in North Carolina. A dump truck trailer left behind is what volunteer Jeff Felzien is tasked with filling up.

“We’re up for the challenge We’ll do the best we can and, Lord willing, everyone will get the help they need,” Felzien said.

With so much help sent to Hurricane Florence, supplies are stretched thin right now. What’s left over of shovels and rakes will be sent to Hurricane Michael recovery efforts.

“Each disaster is a little different so it does require adjusting to the changes,” Felzien said.

More supplies and more help will be needed this time around.

“This is just another disaster added to it that’s going to make it even harder,” Cremeans  said.

Volunteers like Felzien will be there through it all.

“It’s a spiritual and emotional fulfillment,” Felzien said.
