DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) – Valley View High School was recognized Thursday for winning Montgomery County’s Battle of the Belts contest.
The winner of Battle of the Belts is chosen during annual fall seat belt audits conducted at area high schools. Volunteers check vehicles at the exits of the schools’ parking lots to determine if drivers and passengers are wearing their seat belts.
Schools are not given advance notice about when an audit will take place.
The annual event is an effort to raise awareness about the importance of wearing a seat belt.
AAA joined representatives from Montgomery County Safe Communities Coalition Thursday to present Valley View High School with their winning plaque.
This is the sixth year the Montgomery County Safe Community Coalition has done a Battle of the Belts contest.
Past winners include: Dayton Regional STEM, Centerville High School, and Dixie High School.
The Ohio Department of Public Safety says that in 2017, seat belts were not worn in 56 percent of fatal crashes.
