GREENE COUNTY, Ohio (WDTN) – One man is dead after falling into a trench at a construction site in Greene County. His body was recovered around 11 p.m. Saturday night. The Regional Technical Rescue Team said the victim was a worker creating a trench for a sewer drain when it collapsed on him.
“A neighbor in the area noticed a piece of heavy equipment was still running and didn’t see anyone around it so they went to investigate,” Michael Guadagno, Regional Technical Rescue Team Coordinator, said.
Guadagno said that neighbor saw the victim buried and called 911. Chief Guadagno said the victim was found eight feet below the ground. He said it was not clear how long he’d been buried.
Family of the victim who were on scene said his name was Dalhbert Burton. They said he’d worked for his company for seven years and didn’t know why he was sent to the work site by himself. His son who said he’d once worked for the company said it was not standard protocol.
Burton’s wife Angel Burton said, “He was alone and that’s not right. There should’ve been somebody else here with him.”
Dozens of emergency personnel were still at the site beyond daylight hours to pull Guadagno out of the trench.
