DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) – Montgomery County Auditor Karl Keith said five illegal credit card skimmers were found over the weekend during a sweep.
Keith said the skimmers were found inside pumps in West Carrollton, Moraine, Miamisburg and Germantown.
Keith said in a news conference Tuesday it was not known how long the devices have been in place nor if any information was retrieved from the skimmers. He urged consumers to monitor their accounts and statements.
Keith also said the devices were found inside pumps that have common key locks.
FIve agents went to about 100 gas stations in the southern part of the county over four days.
More than 45 devices were found in Ohio gas pumps last year alone, including four found in Montgomery County and one in Greene County, according to Keith’s office.
Keith said if a criminal has the proper key one of these devices can be installed in 30 seconds or less.
It is estimated consumers across the country have lost millions of dollars to these types of illegal operations.
