CAMDEN, Ohio (WDTN) – A man is in custody after allegedly holding his girlfriend and her daughter hostage at a home in Preble County, prompting an hours-long standoff with police.

Around 10:10 a.m., Preble County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to 10130 Gratis Jacksonburg Road on reports of a domestic violence incident. Deputies were told that a female at the residence was being held in the house against her will by her boyfriend since late Sunday evening, and that the boyfriend threatened to kill her if she called police.

Upon deputies’ arrival, the woman and her 2-year-old daughter were able to get out of the home. She told authorities that her boyfriend stated that he would harm the police and would not go to jail.

The 38-year-old man refused to leave the residence and was believed to be armed with a rifle. A request was then made for a SWAT and Hostage Negotiation Team from the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies also obtained a search warrant for the residence.

SWAT and Hostage Negotiators spent several hours attempting to make contact with the man, who refused to leave the home or speak with deputies on the phone.

After deploying several rounds of a chemical agent into the house, he eventually exited the residence through an attic vent.

He was treated at the scene by Gratis EMS and then taken to the Preble County Jail. He has been housed on the following preliminary charges:

  • Abduction, a third-degree felony
  • Felonious assault, a fourth-degree felony
  • Domestic violence, a first-degree misdemeanor
  • Obstructing official business, a first-degree misdemeanor

The woman and her daughter were not injured in the incident.

Deputies did recover a rifle from inside the residence.

Preble County deputies were assisted by the Gratis Police Department, West Elkton – Gratis Township Fire Department, and Gratis EMS.
