String of ATM thefts in Dayton has citizens concerned

Local News

DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) – Another attempted ATM theft happened in Dayton on Tuesday, in the same area where it happened in mid-July.

Surveillance video shows a van pulling up to the glass doors at Express Mini Mart. The people inside the vehicle get out, wrap chains around the ATM, and try several times to yank it out of the store, unsuccessfully.

Over the last few months, however, there have been successful attempts in the area.

“They got the little grocery store, the little old pizza hut store, and now here,” said Ariel Smith, a regular at Express Mini Mart.

She has also been keeping tabs on the ATM woes of West Dayton.

“There’s too much stuff to do to be out here stealing from people. It’s already hard enough,” she said.

This most recent attempt off West Third Street was a failed one, just like the last one on July 12 on Little Richmond Road.

The cases keep adding up, leaving the community with less access to their money.

The suspects broke a steel gate and a glass door. As it was happening, police were tipped off by a caller.

In the 911 call, you can hear them say, “They got a mask on, they got a van, I think they are about to take the ATM out of the store.”

The caller says he saw three suspects dressed in all black. They were able to evade police.

If you have any information on the crime, contact the Dayton Police Department.
