DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) – The store closing epidemic has continued into 2019, with more retailers telling malls and shopping centers in the Dayton area they are shutting down or going out of business.
Shopping has changed dramatically with the rise of Amazon, the almost infinite number of options that can be found online, and the dwindling hours of free time one could spend driving to the mall and walking from store to store.
“I think it’s a combination of a lot of things,” Dayton Mall General Manager Dave Duebber said.
“For whatever reason, a lot of these stores have been overstretched for years financially. But a lot of our retailers are doing very well. A lot depends on the store’s concept and the merchandise, and what’s happening with them corporate wide.”
According to USA Today, marketing research firm Coresight Research reported over 6,300 stores are scheduled to close in 2019. The firm reported 5,528 closings last year in the wake of Toys R Us, Sears, Elder Beerman and K-Mart closing stores.
