COLLEGE CORNER, Ohio (AP) — The Preble County Sheriff Mike Simpson says a Miamisburg man died in boating accident at Hueston Woods State Park Tuesday.
The sheriff says 65-year-old Jerald Parlett died after falling out of a boat during a fishing trip.
According to the sheriff, the accident happened just before noon on Tuesday.
Preble County Sheriff’s deputies went to the marina at Acton Lake at Hueston Woods State Park on reports of a possible drowning.
Investigators say two men were fishing from a small boat when Parlett stood up in the boat, causing it to capsize.
Both men fell into the water.
Investigators say two people fishing nearby heard water splashing and went to help the people in the water.
The fishermen got both people out of the water and into their boat.
Investigators say Parlett may have suffered a medical emergency.
The fishermen took both men from the water to the shore and began CPR on Parlett.
“The two local fishermen who assisted Parlett and his friend clearly prevented this incident from becoming a double tragedy,” Sheriff Simpson said. “Without their quick action to get both men from the water and to the shore, I’m afraid we may have had a second death in this case.”
Deputies assisted with CPR until EMS arrived. Parlett was pronounced dead a short time later.
The Montgomery County Coroner’s Office will conduct an autopsy on Parlett.
Investigators say neither Parlett nor the other man who fell in the water were wearing life vests.
Deputies were assisted by Camden EMS, College Corner FD and Ohio Department of Natural Resources.
This case remains under investigation by the Preble County Sheriff’s Office and the Preble County Coroner’s Office.
Authorities say the other man wasn’t seriously injured.
Hueston Woods is roughly 50 miles northwest of Cincinnati. It’s located in Preble and Butler counties.
