Representative Antani pushing to let voters approve sales tax increase

Local News

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Ohio (WDTN) – Representative Niraj Antani of Miamisburg and Representative Todd Smith of Jackson Township have filed a bill requiring a county sales tax increase to be approved by voters.

This is in reaction to the recent increase in county sales tax by the Montgomery County Board of County Commissioners, and the effort to referendum the sales tax increase that did not succeed.

“Sales tax increases, those who are wealthier, they can handle that. This is going to hurt the people who are on fixed incomes and the impoverished,” said Representative Antani.

Under the current law, a board of county commissioners can unilaterally vote to raise the county sales tax.

However, all other local governments such as school boards, townships, and cities must vote to place a levy on the ballot for a tax increase.
