Shane Fraley was carefully inspecting the inside of each of the gas pumps at the AmeriStop Sunoco here Tuesday. He said the gas station is considering replacing the pump locks, in addition to the extra security checks.
“You can’t watch every single person at every pump all the time,” the station manager said. “Now we check it once or twice a day to make sure nothing crazy has happened.”
The extra vigilance was prompted by the discovery of a credit card skimmer in one of the station’s pumps. It was one of five found in different gas stations around Montgomery County between Friday, April 20th and Sunday, April 22nd.
Tuesday, Montgomery County auditor Karl Keith announced his inspectors found the devices during a weekend sweep with the FBI.
They were found at the following locations:
- Marathon – 2822 Dayton-Germantown Pike, Germantown, OH
- Main Street Carryout – 155 S Main Street, Miamisburg, OH
- Shell – 106 S Alex Road, West Carrollton, OH
- AmeriStop – 1903 S Alex Road, West Carrollton, OH
- Marathon – 4520 S Dixie Drive, Moraine, OH
Keith said all of the targets were the same type of fuel pump, all with factory standard locks. He explained thieves can use a universal key to open the pump and install a skimmer in as little as 30 seconds.
“They were very organized. They knew what they were doing. They knew which stations to go to, which were the most vulnerable,” Keith said. “To have that type of criminal element at work and on the streets of our community is very disturbing.”
The auditor’s office said it’s unable to tell how long many of the skimmers were in place or how many customers were victimized. Keith urged any recent customers of the gas stations to double-check their credit card statements and report any suspicious activity.
