DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) – For the first time ever, the U.S. mint at West Point is striking circulating quarters that carry a “W” mint mark.
Starting in April, coin dealers across the country slipped valuable, rare National Park series coins into circulation, with Cincinnati as a release point.
They cannot be bought; you have to find them among your change.
A local coin collector says this is all designed to promote coin collection as a hobby.
“In the old days, you used to be able to look through your change and find a silver coin, and you can’t do that anymore,” says John Eckman of Dixie Coins. “So this is something you can find that actually has some value that is worth a lot more than a quarter.”
These special coins can be worth about $50.
